What to expect, when you’re expecting…A penguin.: Since its mention in march, there has been much speculation ... http://t.co/iXg6OqJYTr

What has Google Taught Us In 2012

With 2013 now upon us, its time to move on from the very harsh 2012. Google has heightened its standards massively in 2012, but what have we learnt from it and how can we move forward? Here are just a few things to remind you of how to move forward over the next year.

Domain Names

With the EMD update hitting us in September 2012, many sites trying to ‘cheat’ the system were penalised with a sometimes significant drop in rankings. Now its not a case of simply going lets see how many keywords we can fit in our domain name. Use your business name and brand build.

Anchor Text & Keyword Distribution

With the huge Google Panda & Penguin updates, its not just a case of building exact match keywords and stuffing keywords into any anchor text you can find. Focus on actually making the site useful for customers, focus on branded keywords rather than ‘cheap loans’. And remember, its quality not quantity so don’t go building thousands of links.

Build Relationships Not Blogrolls

Following on from my last point, link building is not simply about buying 50 blogroll links from some guy off a forum, you need to build real relationships with real people who have an actual interest in the industry. Find sites and blogs that people actually use, if you have a link on a EMD blog about home improvements and they’re talking about sports, its not just that site that will get penalised, you will too.

Get Social

With Google+ no doubt becoming one of the most influential ranking factors over the next few years, get online and get socialising. Social media will be the new link building so get your brand out their throughout Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and anything else, if you can build relationships through social media with bloggers and customers, 2013 is sure to be a great year for you.
