Yes you're right Kevin its always been about content, even when it was easy to get away with poor content that looked like it was written by a robot. But there has of course been a change in strategies used now such as the type of links you build now needing to be less exact match, more natural, and reducing on-site seo to keep panda happy.

But the point really was that the actual type of work an seo does now I think has been added to and changed in that some seo's are not only asked to focus on driving organic traffic through links and articles, content, but also to drive traffic in general. To be more of an online marketing consultant. When I look at the jobs other seo's are doing these days, and at a typical job spec I see more than just seo duties, I see social, copy writing, PR, flash marketing, using banner ads etc, so I think future consultant roles will evolve from just seo to include all other channels of online marketing too, overall goal being ROI organic or not.

But I confess I didnt really go into that point much in this post as I had actual client work impending, thanks for the genuine feedback anyway :)

Do you really think SEO has changed? I mean if you look back it was always about creating content for your users and ensuring it was of a good quality, sure back then you used to be able to generate low quality text and rank.

Now It has to be high quality, does this mean SEO has changed? Or does it mean SEO’ers have to stop being lazy and generate content users want to see? Sure the methods have changed like Images, Videos etc but the concept will never change!

So we used to submit articles to sites like Digg etc and it used to rank well and now we submit to Twitter. The concept of SEO has stayed the sites we use and the lazy tactics which used to work have changed.
