SEO Pros and Cons – Venice Update
Hello and welcome to this week’s SEO video blog, in which we’re going to continue to look at the effects and implications of Google’s Venice Update.
Whilst all of Google’s updates have inspired plenty of discussion and even controversy in the SEO world – the potential is for Venice to be the most talked about yet.
So, most of us know by now that Venice relates to Google’s new actions to display more localised search results. Many of us will have started to see the effects of this over recent weeks – and in this video we’re going to take a look into the pros and cons of Venice and what it means for SEO.
Firstly, it has to be recognised that the Venice update provides a lot of positives for local businesses. Many will be now be experiencing a lot more exposure through search – keywords that previously ranked on a very small regionalised basis may now rank nationally for all searchers with a set relevant location, potentially providing highly increased traffic.
However, the flip side of this is that websites that offer a nationwide service and previously ranked in google for national keywords regardless of the searcher’s defined location may now be experiencing problems.
Further to this, just because a business is based locally, this does not necessarily mean that they are able to provide the best product or service for individual searcher’s requirements.
Finally, there is the issue of quality in search results – Google’s primary aim has always been to provide users with the highest quality results for their search queries. However, we have seen instances in which this new change favouring local listings has led to poor quality local websites appearing in advance of higher quality, but less localised, websites.
So, an interesting change from Google, which, despite presenting some positives for local businesses, has also presented a number of more contentious issues.
