What to expect, when you’re expecting…A penguin.: Since its mention in march, there has been much speculation ... http://t.co/iXg6OqJYTr

Its all just a popularity contest…

I’m sure unless you have been living under a rock for the past year, you will already be aware of the sheer power behind social media as of present. I think it’s fair to say a large amount of people find it difficult these days to complete a minor task such as a trip to the local pub, without checking in, updating their status and posting a picture of their refreshing beverage. No? Maybe that’s just me..

But what does this mean for your business? Well, a lot of business owners may strive to achieve a mass amount of likes on their facebook page, with the idea that their google rankings will potentially improve. This however, is not necessarily the case. In fact it is far more resourceful to use social media as a way of driving users to share your website. Not only will this increase your online presence and divert more traffic to your site, but it also creates a vast array of relevant back links.

But ‘How do I get people to share my website?’ I hear you cry! Fear not attention seekers, here are 5 simple tips…

1. Exciting new information!

No one wants to read an advert. By creating a page with something new and insightful about your field, visitors will be more likely to share this with their peers. If people enjoy reading something, they are more likely to pass it on. Simple!

2. Make your social signals visible.

Pretty self-explanatory, but important. As much as your customers may have adored the top notch job you did on their bathroom tiles, there is little chance they will hunt down a way of sharing it. Make your buttons obvious!

3. Include a video.

Do not underestimate the power of multimedia, not only will it engage your audience in ways that the written word
only dreams of. Users are more likely to share a video than an essay. (Laziness that’s what it is..)

4. Ask people.

If you don’t ask, you don’t get! Bribery is always an option.. There is definitely no harm in offering a little something in return for a retweet. Competitions and samples work well in this format, who doesn’t love a free gift?

5. Interact.

By commenting and sharing on posts from authorities in your field, they are more likely to return the favour. However even if they are not feeling so generous, it will still show your audience that you are active and aware of what is happening within your community.

So there you have it! By following these simple steps you I’m sure your website will be trending, shared and generally adored in no time!

So about that bribery… #feelfreetoreturnthefavour
