Whether online or offline, planning is arguably the most important aspect of any marketing campaign. Taking time to get to know a business, their target audience and the key messages that they hope to communicate can only improve the success of a campaign. As such, it is important to choose a company that offers an internet marketing service that takes time to set out a clear strategy.

Previous blog posts have suggested that an internet marketing service is simply an umbrella term for various techniques that are used to improve the exposure of a website within the search engines and across the rest of the web. Techniques include; link building, article marketing, press release distribution, directory submissions, social media marketing and e-mail marketing.

The first port of call for any strategy should be to consider what the business is all about – what services do they offer? What industry do they belong to? What is their target audience? This will then help an online marketing specialist to decide which techniques will work best for the company.

For example, whilst a social media campaign on Twitter and Facebook may work for a Charity, it may not be as successful for a plumbing company. Instead they may need to focus their efforts upon the distribution of press releases and newsworthy content to raise their profile.

It is essential that a marketing consultant understands the audience that the company wants to target through their campaign – the profile of their usual consumers. This will then help them to place information, links and profiles in places on the web that the target audience is likely to access them.

Going back to the previous example – those interested in the work of a charity may be keen to keep up to date with their latest projects by following their Twitter feed, making this a worthwhile avenue to tap into the target audience. Unfortunately, a plumbing company may find that it is difficult to identify their audience on social networking websites.

Finally, I think it is important to note that planning should not just start with the online marketing campaign. As previously mentioned in a blog that was posted last week – ‘SEO Face Off: Design vs. Content,’ marketing and the website design should work together to achieve overall success online.

Just as the online marketing consultant should consider what the business is about, so should the web designer. This is important as after capturing the target audience and directing them to the website through the various marketing techniques, they should feel fulfilled when they finally arrive on the site.

If you are planning to invest in an internet marketing service, make sure that the company is willing to get to know your company and explain the strategy that they propose.
