The main thing that anyone involved in Internet marketing needs to learn is that search engines look at the quality of links over the quantity. As each link acts as a vote for your site to the search engines of quality and relevance it is important to have these votes from reputable sites that in the eyes of the Internet are of good quality themselves.
Ensuring that you get your links from sites that posses a few certain qualities will put you in a good place to get your site recognised by the search engines and place you higher up the SERP’s.
Ensure the site you are getting a link from has a page rank:
It is more beneficial to get a link off a page from another site that already has a page rank. Getting a link off one of these sites will enable some of this page rank ‘juice’ to be filtered onto your site increasing your own sites page rank. Its not always essential but it certainly has more benefits to the progression of your site on a longer term basis if you can achieve this.
Make sure the links are ‘Follow Links’:
Look at an existing out going links that already feature on the website you are looking at trying to get a link from will enable you to see if the links they provide are follow or no follow. A no follow link means that the link will offer no SEO benefits to your site so its not really worth taking the time to get a link from this site. If you highlight the link text and ‘view selection source’ you will be able to see in the code if it says ‘nofollow’. If this text isn’t there then this link will give your site SEO benefit.
Ensure that your links come from industry related sites:
If your site is one for a hair and beauty salon you would benefit more by having links from other sites within the hair, beauty and health industries as these are of a similar theme. A builders site could go for links on sites that are related to home improvement and home maintenance. Looking for quality industry directories across the Internet with this theme in mind and looking for other websites within these similar industries that have a links page may also be worth contacting to see if they will add a link from their site to yours.
Check out your competitors:
Look at the websites that are currently on page 1 in the search engines and copy their URL into yahoo site explorer. Click on the inlinks tab and this will enable you to see a list of everywhere your competitors have external links that point to their site. Going through these lists of links will show you places that you can also apply for links to.
Add links to your site in blogs and articles:
Writing articles related to your site containing your keywords are beneficial if you get them distributed across the Internet on various article sites that have good page ranks and follow links etc. Create a link within these articles back to your site. The same can be done in blog commenting and guest blogging on other high quality sites in the industry.

Once you already know the nitty-gritty of SEO, always remember to play fair. Spamming, buying links, reciprocal linking, etc., will earn your site a penalty from Google. A penalty will hurt your web rankings in the long-term, so do behave.
